ive years ago, when Classic Trains reached age 10, we devoted our Spring
2010 anniversary issue to the commemoration of an even more significant
event: the end of steam on North America’s major railroads, which occurred
When 1940 began, the first of the F series, FT No. 103, had just embarked on its
50 years before. In this, our 15th anniversary issue, we salute the locomotive that,
more than any other, was responsible for vanquishing steam: Electro-Motive’s F unit.
11-month demonstration tour; by year’s end, a large and growing portion of railroad-
ing was convinced that the future lay in diesels. On the 75th anniversary of No. 103’s
big year, we’ve filled this issue with material on the FT and the F models it spawned.
As we did in our Summer 2012 issue when the E unit turned 75, we’ve engaged
diesel authority Preston Cook to explain the evolution of the series, from FT to FL9
[page 20], and to show, in a cutaway drawing, an F unit’s internal components [54].
Preston also wrote pieces covering FT marketing [36] and construction [39]. Jim
Shaughnessy recalls the final years of Boston & Maine’s FTs [42].
Next we present an EMD man’s memories of designing and road-testing F3s [48].
In “Ingles Color Classics,” our Senior Editor gives the oft-overlooked FP7 its due [56],
while “What’s in a Photograph?” analyzes a scene of Union Pacific F3s [66]. Begin-
ning on page 68, “Photo Section” features the F units of 14 railroads. The story of the
New Haven FL9’s troubled birth and long career starts on page 78. Finally, a senior
Chicago & North Western officer remembers his road’s business-train F7s [84].
