SPITFIRE RACES IN
t is all change north of the border:
1 April marks the switch from
FirstGroup running the ScotRail
franchise to Abellio. The incomers
have wisely kept an experienced
hand, Managing Director Steve
Montgomery, in place to manage a
mix of existing and fresh managers.
Scotland has had a team of winning
operators of late, with the train
operating company taking the Silver
Whistle for most improved regional
operator in the right time arrivals
category at the Golden Whistles this
year, and Network Rail’s Scotland
Route picking up the Gold Whistle
as best NR Route at delay reduction.
Keeping much of the team that has
helped achieve this makes sense.
Mention of Scotland brings to
mind that this year marks the 125th
anniversary of the opening of that
most iconic of railway structures in
the country, the Forth Bridge. Part
of the 125 celebrations in March
included an event recalling the
Forth Bridge raid: I am indebted to
photographer John Furnevel for
details on this interesting incident in
the history of the bridge.
The raid occurred on
16 October 1939, some six weeks
into World War 2 and a few months
before the bridge’s 50th anniversary.
Below the bridge is Inchgarvie, a
wartime gun emplacement at
that time, providing protection
for the bridge and the nearby
Rosyth naval base (the target of the
1939 Luftwaffe raid).
Three Royal Navy ships were
damaged and 16 crew killed in the
attack, during which Spitfires of
603 ‘City of Edinburgh’ squadron
from nearby Turnhouse and 602
‘City of Glasgow’ squadron based at
Drem were scrambled. Three enemy
aircraft were shot down and two
German crew members were picked
up by a local fishing boat.
The raid on 16 October 1939
marked a number of ‘firsts’ in World
War 2. This was the first air raid over
Britain; the first occasion on which
Spitfires engaged with enemy
planes; the first enemy planes shot
down over Britain; and the first
prisoners of war captured.
Edward Thomson, an eye witness
who was 10 years old and travelling
by train over the Forth Bridge at the
time, recalls: ‘On 16 October 1939
I was a passenger on the Dundee
section of an Edinburgh to Aberdeen
train which had just entered the
first arch at the southern end of the
Forth Bridge. The next stop was to be
Leuchars Junction.
‘I was in the corridor with an
older boy called Jack Thomas
from Edinburgh. We were looking
downstream to the right of the
carriage and were trying to identify
some of the fleet at anchor below
the bridge.
‘Almost simultaneously there was
a giant waterspout as high as the
bridge alongside one of the capital
ships and a barge tied up alongside;
it seemed to fly up in the air! The
German bombers were in plain sight
only a short distance away flying
parallel to the bridge.
‘Meanwhile the train stopped
briefly and as it did so the painters
and riggers working on the bridge
scrambled from the scaffolding and
made for shelter.
‘The train carried on without
further incident, only by this time
RAF Spitfires had become involved
and had driven the raiders out
towards the sea.’
Exciting stuff! Hopefully the
situations encountered by Steve
Montgomery and his new team
will not be so
dangerous: we
wish them all
the best in their
endeavours.
