o Leamington for the Railway
Industry Association’s
estimable annual innovation
conference. And what better way
to get there than in a comfy Mk 3
on Chiltern’s breakfast express? A
special on-board meal was provided
on a service train laid on to celebrate
the early completion of the Harbury
restitution works with a few lucky
conference-goers, of which I was one.
Scrambled eggs and salmon
with the glory of early spring in
the Chilterns outside the window
is a treat. But Chiltern boss Rob
Brighouse doesn’t miss a trick when
he has a captive carriage-load of VIPs,
including Office of Rail Regulation
Chair Anna Walker, on hand - so the
views of the scrumptious countryside
had to wait on completion of a
whiteboard presentation.
Of course Chiltern has a good
story to tell. The redoubling of the
line in stages, upgrading to 100mph
running, the introduction of Mk 3
loco-hauled trains and soon the
opening of the line to Oxford – this is
an impressive record of expansion.
One of the most telling points
in the presentation concerned

passenger comments
following the completion of the
Evergreen 3 upgrading in 2011.
Customers seemed to take for
granted the 100mph schedules
and the Mk 3 comfort - what really
exercised them was the introduction
of wi-fi. Coupled with power points
and tables offering elbow room, the
opportunity to be connected really
did turn Chiltern trains into mobile
offices, making the 20-minute time
penalty vis-à-vis Virgin much less
of an issue. The feedback on
Evergreen 3 was hurrah for wi-fi –
everything else paled by comparison.
Belatedly, the Department for
Transport has taken the significance
of this on board. Everybody was
astonished when the Department
specified the Class 700s for
Thameslink without wi-fi, but
I understand that efforts are being
made to overturn that myopic
decision now. Unfortunately the first
‘700s’ have been completed without
even passive provision.
Asked by my colleague Tony Miles
when this might be resolved, GTR
MD Charles Horton said ‘We are in
discussion with Siemens and the DfT -
the IT world moves on!’. Let’s hope for
some positive news on this one soon.
Now Chiltern is trying to anticipate
the future again: when it opens in
September, Oxford Parkway station
won’t have a booking office. Instead,
Atos is to supply up-to-the-minute
automatic ticket retailing equipment,
and there will be staff on the
concourse to assist – like self
check-out at the supermarket.
Even more ambitious are Chiltern’s
plans for bank-card ticketing, à la TfL.
It is a bold step for a mainline operator,
but Rob Brighouse is convinced
his passengers will soon gain the
confidence to wave-and-pay.
On hearing this news, one wag
sighed: ‘We may just have managed
to perfect the dinosaur’. He was
referring, of course, to the ITSO
cards now being introduced by
other operators.
There were views of the future
aplenty when we got to the
RIA conference. Chris Warkup, CEO
of the Knowledge Transfer Network,
reflected on how he spends his time
trying to forge connections between
people who wouldn’t otherwise meet
– then you get serendipity like the
aerospace technology in the
London Underground composite
doors project that took the
Environment prize in the Railway
Industry Innovation Awards last year.
Here’s looking forward to some
similar success stories at this year’s
RIIA, which takes place in central
London on 26 June. The RIA sponsors
the event, which is organised by the
Modern Railways
4th Friday Club.

speaker Clare Moriarty of the DfT)
make it worth sparing the time.
For, as Chris Warkup so memorably
put it, ‘sometimes when you bring
together people that don’t normally
meet, magic happens’.
