Instructions for KazaaSearch users.*
************************************

1. KS needs no installation. It doesn't create any Registry keys. (Although, it uses Kazaa registry settings, both for reading and writing.)
If you are placing a newer version of KS in the same directory, be advised to remove old ini-file from it.

2. Place KS executable in a separate folder and run it. After first start it will create several files in that folder:

a) KazaaSearch.ini - initialization file; used for storing settings, information obtained from Kazaa application, and language settings.
b) KazaaSearch.dat - tiny file with last search index.
c) KazaaSearch.list - most important file; it stores your search list and search results.
Recent versions also create KazaaSearch.list.bak before rewriting list file.
d) SupernodeHistory.txt - the list of supernodes you were using; updated when you connect to another supernode.

In case of recoverable errors KS also creates a KazaaSearch.log file with the date and time of caught exception.
After catching this error KS re-opens and restarts the search without prompt (in silent mode).

3. NOTE: if you use non-English Kazaa(Lite), please translate in the file KazaaSearch.ini (after it was created) the following texts (namely, possible states of downloads) into your language. Input exactly the same text as Kazaa uses for download status. For Dutch Kazaa, this looks like this:
###Foreign Language section###
More sources needed:
Meer bronnen nodig
Searching:
Zoeken
Remotely queued:
Wachtrij op afstand
etc.

Unfortunately, I was not able to translate all of the words into other languages. Please do it yourself. If you do not translate these texts, KS will still work, but it will use alternative method for determining the status of downloads (based on the state of Toolbar buttons Hold-Resume-Cancel), which does not use any language-specific information.

Dutch and German users can just place pre-formatted ini files (see Dutch/German folder) and run KS, which will do the rest automatically.
DO NOT use these files if you are Dutch or German but your Kazaa(Lite) version is English!

4. Some functions of the program do not work correctly with non-English Kazaa so far. Among them are:

a) Sorting results not by # of users. Sorting by # of users does work everywhere.

b) Saving extended info - also uses some titles of the header, like User and Filename.

5. There is a way to import a plain-text list of titles to find without typing them manually in the SearchList editor.
Before running KS for the first time, put the file named "searchlist.txt" looking like this inside:

###############
#Search list for Kazaa#
###############
# This is just a single-line comment
#Incomplete albums/compilations:
#Summer of Love 95 CD2:
David Alverado - Lagrimas
Space Navigator - Rabbitts
Space Navigator - Rabbits
Der Prozess - Tod In Dosen
Microglobe - Summer Of Love
High On Hope - Summer Of Love
#END of example file

If you want to reload such plain-text list, clean the list with "Clean All", and then press "Reload searchlist".
This button APPENDS to your SearchList without prompt all the lines in that text file.
The text format list does NOT contain advanced search options; it contains only "Search term".

6. KS has an internal mechanism of self-restarting when any exception happens, either due to my bugs, or due to problems with Kazaa-KS interaction.
This mechanism allows KS to run absolutely stable during days and months.
However, this may be dangerous in the sense that a dead-loop may occur; in case of such event, delete all files in the KS directory and kill the program as soon as it pops up Error window or anything. Symptoms of dead-loop restart: flashing (blinking) KS icon in systray.

7. KS automatically closes some of the Kazaa(Lite) popup windows when search is running.
It automatically presses NO or Cancel button on each relevant popup.
Cancel confirmation popups will NOT be closed. Auto-update popups emerging upon start WILL be closed.

8. KS automatically restarts Kazaa if it is closed or dead, using path to Kazaa.exe extracted from the registry.

9. If you install other version of Kazaa and continue using KS, please delete .ini file, because it stores version-specific info about Kazaa.
KS will create a new relevant ini file, but only if you remove old one.
NOTE: you may also wish to remove .list file, because the found files results can be arranged incorrectly into columns.
KS uses the layout of first found file to create columns for the whole bunch of search results for each separate search-item.
If you install another Kazaa, columns may change. If you can stand it, you may leave .list file unremoved.

10. KazaaTexts.exe is a command-line tool that reads and saves in HTML table format almost all the textual data visible in Kazaa:
Shared files, Search results, Downloads, Uploads, Statusbar. Run it from a command line
(Windows Start Menu-> Run -> cmd -> go to dir with KazaaTexts -> run KazaaTexts).

11. KazaaMsgRead.exe is a command-line tool that reads and saves all messages sent and received by your Kazaa.
You can't recover messages sent or received before the last restart of Kazaa; when you close Kazaa, all messages are lost.

12. ReadDBB.exe is a console program that creates a HTML file with all information about currently shared files,
including hashes and sig2dat:// links. To run it, CLOSE Kazaa and start ReadDBB.exe.

13. KazaaNet.exe is a tool for exporting supernode list. It also resolves hostnames and location, using the NETGEO online service.

===Explanation of some Settings===

1. Default settings for new items are only used as default values upon creation of new search term.
They will not affect those which are already created. Therefore, you can't apply changes to ALL items in the list, sorry.
You can only apply these values to all future items.

2. "After each search download only _N_ different files" means that KS will download only N files (considering each group of identical files as ONE file). If this checkbox is unchecked, this means NO LIMIT.
"Stop searching an item ...": if unchecked, also means NO LIMIT.
"Press Search More button": means zero if unchecked. If checked, value can be any integer, but actually it's no use to input 2 or higher - KAzaa won't find more...

3. Stop search after starting _N_ downloads is the limit on the total number of dwnlds started during one session. When you close KS, NTotalDownloads counter is forgiven (it is not stored in any files, unlike this limit which IS stored in ini file).

4. Search timeout should be not less than 100 seconds. Otherwise your search may be not finished. I use 120 seconds timeout, but this depends on Kazaa version and your connection and computer performance.

5. KS can save additional information about found files, namely: User IP, his Supernode, and File hash (20-byte hex string).
This info is enough to create a dat file independently of Kazaa, or even to download the file using your favorite HTTP client (GetRight, ReGet, Gozilla, etc.).
However, each request of extended info takes 8-10 seconds CPU time. Enable this option only if you really need it.

6. KS can compare found files with the results found in previous searches of that search item. You can make it reject files which are considered identical to those already found.
However, you have to know that in the current implementation files are compared ONLY by their size (rounded to KB). So, different files can accidentally have the same size.
On the other hand, files which are essentially the same, and have the same duration (i speak about audio and video), but made with different software or quality,
can have different size. Moreover, in the present version of KS the state of each particular search result is not recorded. So, if you limit the number of started downloads per one search,
and the search returned more results so that some of them were rejected due to this limitation, these results will be rejected again, because they are saved as "Found files" (without saying if they were started or not).

Having this all in mind, decide if you want to enable this option or not.

===Search tips: how to increase probability to find a rare item===

1. Check you spelling. Are you sure that you spell each word correctly? Go to google.com or any huge search engine and type that "artist - title" in quotation marks (this usually means exact phrase search). If you find only a few or no relevant references, spelling must be wrong. Also try searching "Artist" AND "title" - this will find more references.
However, even if you find a lot of relevant links, this does not necessarily means your spelling is absolutely correct.
Some misspelllings are common, so don't wonder if somebody did same mistake :)
Probably you will find a lot more references if you correct your spelling. You may wish to search for both correct spelled item and mispelled, provided that this misspelling is common/popular (produces a lot of web links).

2. Select search term carefully. It should be the minimal set of words which still produces ONLY relevant results. Avoid excessive words, because they diminish chances to find something --- these words may be not included or misspelled in SOME filenames/tag info...
