(8.5 x 11.0 inch) paper for personal use.
In this third edition, both simplified and traditional Chinese text appears in a larger, more legible font. By ordering entries
phonetically by Pinyin, readers may quickly locate similar words and phrases. Since the same punctuation may be used for
several Chinese words,
WDCD
is the first dictionary to include both HSK proficiency levels (1 to 6) and a frequency mark to
help users choose definitions. Frequency marks
for the 400 most popular single and multi-character Chinese words are
based upon actual user interactions with Loqu8’s augmented learning tools.

is arranged by
Pinyin
phonetic pronunciations. To encourage Chinese readers and
learners, words with similar pronunciations are adjacent. For example words starting with
bei3
are grouped together, then
bei4
are grouped together.

Pinyin with tone marks. Pinyin is the most common phonetic system for transcribing Mandarin
Pinyin with tone numbers
Bopomofo (or
zhuyin fuhao)
is a Mandarin phonetic system popular in Taiwan
Simplified Chinese. Most common form used in modern China
Traditional Chinese. The standard in Hong Kong and Taiwan
Word frequency
is a mark given to the 400 most popular single and multi-character Chinese words
HSK (Hanyu
Shuiping Kaoshi)
level corresponding to the Modern Chinese language proficiency exam for non-native
speakers. Level 1 is the easiest and features the most common words. Level 6 is the highest tier and has the most difficult
words.
H. English meaning with usage notes
When the same pronunciation (Pinyin) is used for multiple Chinese words, the frequency mark and HSK level can direct
readers to the more common, familiar meanings. WDCD shows the same frequency and HSK information for all meanings of
the same Chinese words.
