set me thinking about a game I’ve
played for the last 20-odd years,
which has not only given me a lot
of pleasure but has seriously honed
my picture editing skills.
It goes like this: whenever I visit a photographic
exhibition (and I do go to a great many) I allow
myself to choose one picture that I would buy (this
is purely on an imaginary basis) – and this goes for
both selling and public exhibitions from the very
small to the major shows.
The routine is that I have a fairly quick look
around the exhibition as a whole, then go back to
the beginning, read all the captions, and work my
way through to the end. After that, it’s a free-
for-all – I go back and forth, compare pictures,
mentally mark out possible contenders and,
finally, when I make my decision, spend time
gloating over my (imaginary) acquisition.
Now, this isn’t as barmy as it may sound.
Apart from the fact that it’s great fun and a very
absorbing pastime, it does mean looking very
carefully at the work. I look for vintage prints
(when applicable), compare them with modern
prints, think about why I like the image and
whether I would always feel the same about it.
Above all, I have to really love it (I admit that,
very
occassionally, I don’t choose a picture).
There are times when I find I’ve spent an
(imaginary) £10,000-£15,000 – or more. At
other times I find I’ve chosen more modestly,
but I always know that the picture I’ve chosen will
stay with me, even if only as a memory, and will be
cherished as such.
I am, in fact, one of the biggest collectors in
the country, if only people knew – I have several
Sarah Moons, one beautiful André Kertész (which
has pride of place), a Sugimoto, a Sally Mann,
a Martin Bogren, a Michael Kenna, a Tessa
Traeger… and many, many more.
